Veterans Property Tax Relief Act
Section 1: Short Title This Act may be cited as the Veterans Property Tax Relief Act.
Section 2: Findings and Purpose (a) Findings: The Congress finds that veterans who are 50% or more disabled as a result of their service to our nation have made significant sacrifices for our country. (b) Purpose: The purpose of this Act is to provide financial relief to disabled veterans by granting them a property tax exemption.
Section 3: Definitions In this Act: (a) Disabled Veteran: A veteran who has been rated by the Department of Veterans Affairs as 50% or more disabled due to a service-connected disability. (b) Property Tax: Any tax imposed on real property by a state or local government.
Section 4: Property Tax Exemption (a) Exemption: A disabled veteran who owns a primary residence shall be exempt from property taxes imposed on that residence up to a maximum assessed value of [insert appropriate value]. (b) Documentation: To qualify for the exemption, a disabled veteran must provide proof of their disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs to the local tax authority. (c) Implementation: State and local governments shall implement procedures to ensure that eligible disabled veterans receive the exemption provided for in this Act.
Section 5: Funding (a) Federal Reimbursement: The federal government shall reimburse state and local governments for the revenue lost due to the property tax exemptions granted under this Act. (b) Authorization of Appropriations: There is authorized to be appropriated such sums as may be necessary to carry out the purposes of this Act.
Section 6: Effective Date This Act shall take effect on January 1 of the calendar year immediately following its enactment.
Section 7: Severability If any provision of this Act, or the application thereof to any person or circumstance, is held invalid, the remainder of the Act and the application of such provision to other persons or circumstances shall not be affected thereby.
